Vera C. Rubin Observatory: Looking to the depth of galaxies

The Vera C. Rubin Observatory will scan the 18,000 deg² sky at a coadded depth of 27.5 mag in ten years. The scan speed, field-of-view (FoV), and sensitivity of Rubin could shed new light on many unanswered questions of astronomy. In this talk, I will focus on the diffuse feature at the outskirts of galaxies, which could be the tidal remnants and reflect the merging history of the galaxy. Besides, there have been theories that different kinds of stellar-disc-breaks form through stellar migration, accretion, and in-situ formation. These different scenarios have not been constrained, which Rubin might help by providing better images of them. Such kind of studies have been conducted using Subaru, which has a similar depth but a much smaller FoV, and is limited to the celestial equator. I will also discuss what synergies can be conducted with Rubin/LSST. For example, the new generation surveys in other band, such as eROSITA in X-ray and WALLABY in H ɪ, could utilize the LSST images for galaxy evolutions in different environments. Especially, it is possible to combine the image from CSST, which has a higher resolution but is shallower, and take full advantage of both surveys.
