On August 6, 2018, the mid-term summary meeting of the BHOLE (Black hole-Host Lifecycle Evolution) project was held at the National Astronomical Observatories of CAS, with the goal of evaluating the work of the four subgroups of the project and to better continue the project’s execution.  The invited expert group consisted of : Hongshan Mo, Deputy Director of the Fundamental Research Third Division of the MOST High-tech Research Development Center, Peiwen Ji, Former Executive Deputy Director of Division of Mathematics & Physics of NSFC, Yufeng Mao, Deputy Director ofDivision of Mathematics & Physics of CAS Ministry of Frontier Science andEducation, Yipeng Jing, Academician from Shanghai Jiaotong University, Gang Zhao, Associate Director of National Astronomical Observatories of CAS, Suijian Xue, Associate Director of National Astronomical Observatories of CAS, Zonghong Zhu, Professor from Beijing Normal University, Wei Cui, Professor from Tsinghua University, Longlong Feng, Professor from Sun Yat-sen University and Purple Mountain Observatories of CAS, Aigen Lin, Professor from University of Missouri, Yefei Yuan, Professor from University of Science and Technology of China. Members of the project science expert group include Youyuan Zhou, Academician from University of Science and Technology of China, and Zhiqiang Shen, Director of Shanghai Astronomical Observatory of CAS.  Also in attendance were members of the project and members of the project management group.

Four group leaders gave comprehensive reports on each group’s work, introducing the overall progress, the target achievement status, research achievements, talent training, academic exchanges, budget performance, challenges and improvement measures, as well as the next-step plans.  Luis C. Ho, Principle Investigator of the project, gave the project’s mid-term summary report.

Expert Group

The expert group agrees that since its inception in July 2016, the four groups have all successfully fulfilled the proposed targets in the original research plan, and have made remarkable achievements in research, talent training and academic exchanges. The management of each group and the project have been well implemented, and the funds have been well used. They also gave advice on the next-step work, including how to enhance the cooperation and exchanges among the groups, and to use large international facilities in a more efficient way.

The project midterm evaluation meeting will be organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology of PRC at the beginning of September, 2018.
