The Kavli Astrophysics Postdoctoral Fellowship is a joint 4-year fellowship between Kavli Institute for Astronomy and Astrophysics (KIAA) at Peking University and Kavli Institute for the Physics and Mathematics of the Universe (Kavli IPMU) at the University of Tokyo, with partial support from the Kavli Foundation (KF). This Prize Fellowship is intended to be awarded to top applicants with backgrounds consistent with awardees of other named fellowships in astronomy. The fellowship aims to strengthen ties between KIAA and Kavli IPMU by having the fellows in residence at each institute for 2 years. Fellows are supported by a salary of $70,000 per year (USD) plus $10,000 per year of research funds, with contributions split equally between the host institute and the Kavli Foundation.
Two postdocs have been awarded this prize fellowship. Hassen Yesuf studies how massive galaxies evolve with cosmic time and will work at KIAA through February 2021 and then move to Kavli IPMU. Yuya Sakurai, who uses computer simulations of accretion onto supermassive black holes to understand the formation of the seeds of the first massive objects in the universe, started at Kavli IPMU in April 2020 and will move to KIAA in 2022.
